President Biden’s Wednesday night speech was met with derision by a number of prominent Republicans, with some calling it the “most divisive” address ever given by a commander-in-chief.
Others GOPers suggested Biden’s remarks, where he slammed “extreme MAGA Republicans” and urged Americans to vote for Democrats in the Nov. 8 midterm elections in order to “preserve democracy,” were an attempt to deflect from the administration’s failed policies.
“I listened to the president’s speech, I don’t remember hearing anything about inflation, about gas, about border, about fentanyl, about crime, or not even the 98 individuals on the border on the terrorist watchlist they have caught,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told Fox News’s Sean Hannity on Wednesday.
“President Biden is trying to divide and deflect at a time when America needs to unite — because he can’t talk about his policies that have driven up the cost of living,” McCarthy wrote on Twitter in reaction to Biden’s speech.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said on Twitter that Americans faced with economic hardships didn’t want to hear another Biden speech.
“Americans are struggling to put food on the table because of Biden’s socialist spending spree. They do not want to hear another rambling speech from Biden,” Blackburn wrote.
Some called the president’s remarks six days away from Election Day historically “divisive.”
“Joe Biden’s speech tonight was one of the most divisive speeches ever given by a sitting President,” Brigitte Gabriel, founder of conservative grassroots group ACT for America, said.

“Biden gave the most DIVISIVE speech in American history two months ago, and tonight, he outdid himself once again,” Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) said in a tweet.
“Biden is going to get served with a whole bunch of Democracy on November 8th. Democrats are going to be SWEPT OUT of power. On Tuesday, MAGA is going to WIN BIG!!!” Jackson, who served as the White House doctor to former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, added.
Biden opened his speech railing against political violence, citing the ruthless hammer attack committed against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband last week. But he failed to mention threats made against conservative public figures, such Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, which conservative radio talk show host Buck Sexton pointed out Wednesday.

“Biden is so worried about ‘political violence’ but has he mentioned the attempted assassination of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in this speech? Of course not. Because this speech isn’t about healing or unity. Quite the opposite,” Sexton wrote in a tweet.
Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Shadi Hamid noted that some of his left-leaning friends disliked the speech as well, saying that some called it “a disaster.”
“Early reviews from my small-d democratic friends is that Biden’s speech was a bit of a disaster,” Hamid said.
“It’s not the end of the world, but it’s definitely not good. Biden’s speech was an escalation,” the scholar said in his analysis of Biden’s remarks. “And there was no reason to do that in the days leading up to an election when things are already very tense.”
