The Governor of the Bank of England said the UK needs to 'rebuild its reputation' after Liz Truss's mini-budget left Britain just 'hours' from economic meltdown. Andrew Bailey said the Bank of England was forced to intervene after September's mini-budget, which caused the pound to hit an all-time low. His comments came just hours after the Bank of England hiked the rate of interest from 2.25 per cent to 3 per cent to tackle soaring inflation in a move that added thousands of pounds to annual unfixed mortgage bills.  Asked how close Britain came to financial Armageddon in September, Mr Bailey told Channel 4 News : 'I think at the point when we intervened I can tell you that the messages we were getting from the markets were that it was hours.' Talking about the Bank of England having to promise to buy £65billion of government bonds to protect pension funds, Mr Bailey said: 'We certainly reached a point where markets were very unstable and these were...

Rishi Sunak has dismissed claims he will be 'Scrooge' this Christmas despite mounting fears over looming tax hikes and austerity. The PM and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt are believed to have met over the weekend to agree the outline of a huge squeeze to fill a £60billion black hole in the public finances. The Autumn Statement on November 17 is expected to focus on curbs to spending, with public sector wages rising lower than inflation to help secure £35billion of savings. But there could also be £25billion of tax rises - including a £10billion raid on tax breaks for pension contributions. Mr Hunt is due to submit the main outline of his plans to the Office for Budget Responsibility by this morning.  He had hoped for a 50/50 split between cuts and tax rises but last week's dire Bank of England warning of a long recession suggests tax revenue will be even worse than anticipated. Speaking as he headed for the COP27 summit in Egypt, Mr Sunak said he was determined to 'deliver g...
