Elizabeth Warren Comes for Elon Musk After Twitter Purchase on ‘The Late Show’: “I Got a Real Problem With Him”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren did not hold back when Stephen Colbert asked for her thoughts on Elon Musk taking over as head of Twitter during Wednesday night’s (Nov. 2) episode of The Late Show. With the talk show host pointing out that the politician has “never been a huge fan of billionaires,” Warren couldn’t help but roll her eyes when he brought up Musk.

“One of the people who you’ve had a few run-ins with in the past, you’ve called out for his behavior in the past, is someone who strangely is dabbling in conspiracy theories on Twitter and that’s the new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk,” Colbert explained.

Musk, who has previously said he would reverse the ban on Donald Trump and put more emphasis on free speech, officially began his gig as the owner of Twitter last week after paying $44 billion for the social media platform. Adding that she’s had her qualms with billionaires, “especially ones who don’t pay their taxes,” Colbert asked the Senator what she thinks about “a billionaire who now owns the platform that is most used to promulgate political idea and argument.”

“So I look at it this way — somebody is going to make the decisions about what we see on Twitter,” Warren began. “It can be made out in the open, it can be made public, it can be made by a commission. We can decide to do that. We can make the rules posted and out there for anybody to see. Or it could be made by one billionaire in a very dark room based on whatever is running around in the middle of his head.”

She continued, “Me, I think those decisions oughta be made out in the open. I don’t think any billionaire oughta be the one who has that kind of power to decide how Americans, how people around the world get a chance to talk to each other. So I got a real problem with him.”

When Colbert jokingly asked if she is “blue-check verified,” referring to Musk’s plans to charge verified accounts $8 per month, Warren said, “I just don’t care.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs on weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS.
